Flusser and Habits

The Gesture of Smoking a Pipe

Flusser uses the word “habit” [Gewohnheit] almost exclusively to mean something that is not conscious, something that in fact obscures or inhibits conscious reflection.  He frequently referred to habits as “veils,” obscuring possibilities of thinking freshly.  He also described the responsibility of an art critic (and the designation is probably broad, applying to those who make considered aesthetic judgements of any kind) as essentially a matter of breaking habits, patterns of thinking–that reliably that reliably resist anything new.

He does not mention the idea of habit in connection with pipe-smoking, however: this he describes in terms of ritual.

Is there any relationship between ritual and habit?
