Flusser felt that the term \u201cart\u201d– in the West — was almost always understood either as “work”–intended to change the world\u2014or as “communication”\u2014intended to share something with another person. \u00a0He thought both were wrong. \u201cThe word art<\/em>,\u201d he wrote, \u201cmeans the gesture through which existence \u2018acts itself out,\u2019\u201d (Flusser 2014a:128). \u00a0He was talking about an aesthetic, ritual<\/em> gesture, one which does not work or communicate, at least not intentionally. \u00a0He returned to this underlying misunderstanding about “art” \u00a0often, if not very systematically. \u00a0He argues, for example, for the aesthetic impact of algorithms or equations and, conversely, for the \u00a0scientific value of, say, Bach or Monet (Flusser 2011a: 24-5). \u00a0He insists on habit as the true aesthetic criterion (Flusser 2002:51-57). He has scant patience with the \u201cridiculous isolation of so-called avant gardism,\u201d (Flusser 2003:240).<\/p>\n
