{"id":1711,"date":"2020-05-02T18:11:49","date_gmt":"2020-05-02T18:11:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nancyannroth.com\/?p=1711"},"modified":"2020-05-11T08:03:01","modified_gmt":"2020-05-11T08:03:01","slug":"image-and-imagine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nancyannroth.com\/?p=1711","title":{"rendered":"Image and Imagine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The German verb \u201ceinbilden\u201d is ordinarily translated into English as \u201cimagine.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;But at one point in&nbsp;<em>Into the<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Universe of Technical Images<\/em>, Flusser calls attention to the&nbsp;<em>difference<\/em>&nbsp;between \u201ceinbilden\u201d and the cognate \u201cimaginieren\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;Expressing his gratitude to Kant for having used the word to mean an active ordering or organization of material into an image, Flusser made \u201ceinbilden\u201d his term for the new capacity &#8212; available in the context of new technology &#8212; to project worlds.&nbsp;&nbsp;He aligned \u201cimaginieren\u201d with cognitive patterns that make and respond to traditional images, e.g., drawing and painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once a translator has decided to reserve the English word \u201cimagine\u201d for use with traditional images, another word is needed for \u201ceinbilden,\u201d the new power for producing technical images. When I was translating&nbsp;<em>Into theUniverse of Technical Images<\/em>, I decided on \u201cenvision\u201d as the term for the new power.&nbsp;&nbsp;It works on several levels: it retains the visual reference, it is active, and, crucially, it is<em>&nbsp;different&nbsp;<\/em>from \u201cimagine\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;If I were doing it again now, however, I suspect I\u2019d adopt \u201cto image\u201d for \u201ceinbilden\u201d, \u201cimaging power\u201d for \u201cEinbildungskraft\u201d.
