{"id":2054,"date":"2020-08-05T07:18:42","date_gmt":"2020-08-05T07:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nancyannroth.com\/?p=2054"},"modified":"2021-01-31T10:26:17","modified_gmt":"2021-01-31T10:26:17","slug":"experiment-entanglement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nancyannroth.com\/?p=2054","title":{"rendered":"Experiment, entanglement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you can think of a camera as an experimental apparatus, like a telescope or a microscope, and, say, a family gathering as the phenomenon under investigation, it seems to help a little with the term \u201centanglement\u201d as it&#8217;s used in physics.  More to the point, perhaps, it helps to see why the people who established the basic terminology of quantum physics, mainly in the 1930s, did most of their experimental work in words &#8212; that is, in thought experiments.\u00a0\u00a0They were not in the laboratory, they were writing<em>\u00a0letters<\/em>\u00a0to one another!\u00a0\u00a0In our thought experiment with the assembled family, in any case, the measuring apparatus &#8212; which comprises camera <em>plus<\/em> photographer &#8212; becomes entangled with the phenomenon under examination. There is no way to reliably separate the two.\u00a0 If there&#8217;s a question about who took the photograph, so much the better, so much more difficult for participants to suppose that there&#8217;s a clear separation between measurer and measured.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The photograph leaves a great many things out, not only sound and taste and texture and smell and temperature, but the tension, antagonism, confusions and desires of years or generations.\u00a0\u00a0It takes effort to make the experiment come out \u201cright,\u201d invariably meaning to \u201cdiscover\u201d that the family is happy.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you can think of a camera as an experimental apparatus, like a telescope or a microscope, and, say, a family gathering as the phenomenon under investigation, it seems to help a little with&#46;&#46;&#46;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":2055,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"bgseo_title":"Experiment, Entanglement and making Photographs","bgseo_description":"The idea of entanglement, from physics, may be a little more accessible if you think of a camera as a measuring instrument, like, say, a telescope, and some people as the \"object\" of the experiment.
