{"id":250,"date":"2012-07-12T07:56:31","date_gmt":"2012-06-07T16:36:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nancyannroth.com\/?p=250"},"modified":"2016-10-09T14:01:47","modified_gmt":"2016-10-09T14:01:47","slug":"working-translation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nancyannroth.com\/?p=250","title":{"rendered":"Working Translation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_252\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nancyannroth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/tempera-on-wood-1456-Antonello-da-Messina.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-252\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-252\" title=\"tempera on wood 1456 Antonello da Messina\" src=\"https:\/\/nancyannroth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/tempera-on-wood-1456-Antonello-da-Messina-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nancyannroth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/tempera-on-wood-1456-Antonello-da-Messina-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/nancyannroth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/tempera-on-wood-1456-Antonello-da-Messina.jpg 430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-252\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Antonella da Messina, St. Jerome in his Study, tempera on wood panel, 1475.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I saw this painting at the National Gallery about ten days ago, at the same time I received some thought-provoking criticisms of my Flusser translations. \u00a0It made me want to clarify&#8211;and defend&#8211;my sense of what I&#8217;m trying to do as a translator. \u00a0I aspire to a &#8220;working&#8221; translation.<\/p>\n<p>For Flusser, only the author of the text in question is qualified to generate a &#8220;true&#8221; translation. \u00a0So, my translation can never be &#8220;true,&#8221; and I don&#8217;t think that was ever part of my ambition. \u00a0To me, Flusser&#8217;s texts are taut and lively. \u00a0They present a radical, exciting message in an oddly very strict, orderly form. \u00a0I&#8217;ve done my best to put his thought in a vernacular English that conveys something of the grammatical and structural fastidiousness of the text with the variously inquisitive, combative, or radically new messages. \u00a0My primary concern is that the translation &#8220;work,&#8221; in the sense of bringing a contemporary reader into the presence of a highly disciplined, erudite mind, capable of very broad, fantastic speculation, and \u00a0intensely engaged with the broad issues of our present and future lives together, as human beings.
