The Cultural Toolbox: Book Review

Anton Treuer, The Cultural ToolBox: Traditional Ojibwe Living in the Modern World, Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2021 I am not Ojibwe. That is, I’m not one of the readers this book explicitly addresses. Still,...

The Melody of Language

If language is like music, surely translators are in the best position to notice it, and to respond, whether with joy or foreboding. Probably all of us hear it. There’s a particular beat, a...

Translating as Play

Long ago — 1968, to be exact — Vilém Flusser proposed a model of human communication based on games (yes, Wittgenstein IS in the background).  It may sound like trivialization, but it isn’t. The...

Code Talker (Book Review)

The Man Made of Words (N. Scott Momaday): Book Review

The book is a collection of short pieces that are between or about or in addition to fiction, but not themselves fiction, the kind of book I always hope will illuminate the nuts and...

Riddley Walker (book review)

This book is hard to read. The language insists on calling attention to itself, so no stars for “ease” or “comfort”.  But I can’t imagine a more effective way of insisting on the fragility,...

Welcome!

about the site

Welcome, and thanks for visiting.  The site is about writing, which I most often take to be a technology for "translating" sound to surface, ephemeral event to durable text, embodied to disembodied authority.  I know there's a before, after, and "in addition to" as well: there are amazing ancient writing systems, or lines made by electrocardiographs or weather forecasting instruments that count as writing for me as well. And there's the threat of a deference to robotic readers undermining human language as such. I'm optimistic, however.

My own writing is here, and if it isn't, there are usually links and references to publications.  There is what I think of as journalism -- mainly reviews of exhibitions and books, a few academic papers, and some more recent non-fiction.  And there are posts, of course.  Translation is separate category.

The site is meant to be a particular kind of link to other people. If they're really people, I'm always really happy to know who they are and what they think, Please use the contact form above. And of course I'd be very pleased if you wanted to subscribe.
